Good Morning! Got Milk?

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it helps the body to regulate itself after an overnight fast and personally, I am a big breakfast person. It's the driving force for me to start my day better and I consider breakfast as my favourite meal of the day. I usually find myself feeling grumpy, sleepy and demotivated when I skip my breakfast so I always make sure to get my stomach filled before I start the day.

What I have for breakfast always differs based on the day. Sometimes, I like to have a heavier meal while sometimes I prefer to go light. Nowadays, I am staying with my parent so breakfast time has never been more exciting. They always make sure to prepare something for us each morning, be it Malaysian style breakfast or a more simple Western-style brekkie. Sometimes, my mum would cook for us and on some other days my dad will go out and buy something instead.

I love milk and having a mother who works as a nurse, I was also thought from early on the importance of well-balanced diet. So, the idea of combining milk with breakfast is not so foreign to me either. We always have a stash of milk in the refrigerator and Dutch Lady PureFarm Milk has been our family's favourite for as long as I can remember. That's why the statistic shown in the graphic above is not something I was aware of before. Almost half of Malaysian children is not getting enough calcium in their diets during the most important growing stage of their life! Not just that, even adults in Malaysia are not getting enough calcium for their body. Most of us are only consuming half of the recommended amount.

There are two main reasons why this happen:
1. Most Malaysian stop drinking milk which is a primary source of calcium once they pass childhood.
2. Milk is typically consumed at breakfast but at least 50% of Malaysian have breakfast irregularly.

To understand the severity of this issue, people need to know why milk is so important in our diet. For starter, milk is rich in calcium which is a mineral that is essential for healthy bones and teeth. Lack of calcium in one's diet may result in:

Other than that, milk also contains other essentials nutrients which include protein, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, and vitamin A, B, C, D. Protein, for instance, is crucial for growth and development of muscle, bones and tissue while vitamin D3 actually helps in aiding the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. Milk also contains 85% water, making it an effective thirst quencher after 8 hours of sleep. A glass of Dutch Lady PureFarm milk in the morning (equals to one serving) will provide your body with at least 275mg of calcium, which is already halfway to fulfil the daily two servings requirement.

Milk Myth Buster!
According to research, Asians are more prone to lactose intolerant which is a condition that causes the body to be unable to digest lactose as easily. This would lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as gas and belly pain. Contrary to popular belief saying that milk is totally unacceptable for all lactose intolerant people, studies have shown that majority of lactose-intolerant people can actually tolerate up to 1 cup of milk daily; and having milk paired with other food will also provide easier digestion for them.

The parent company of Dutch Lady, the Royal FrieslandCampina N.V. have mastered the art of producing milk using only the best practices, techniques and knowledge for over 140 years, and this is the reason that sets the Dutch Lady PureFarm Milk range apart. It is the world's largest dairy corporative owned by farmers and also the original breeders of the Frisian cow, which is now the world's most popular cow breeds for producing milk. They have been sharing their expertise with our local dairy farmers, so the milk quality from Dutch Lady PureFarm milk is definitely the best in the game.Another unique point of the Dutch Lady PureFarm milk is the variety in their milk flavours which helps to cater to different taste buds, be it adult or children. So, on top of the full cream or low fat options, you also have a choice to opt between original milk flavour or have some more fun with their chocolate or strawberry milk!

My 7 Days Breakfast Challenge

What I had: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | Day 7

Documenting my 7 days breakfast challenge on Instagram account was really fun. I didn't realise how exciting it was to plan my first meal of the day, thinking the best breakfast-milk combination that I can try. I started to look forward to the mornings that I sometimes dread about (totally not a morning person). You can see all of the seven meals I shared on the links above but I also decided to talk more about each of them in this blog post too!

Day 1: Big Breakfast with Dutch Lady Care Package

My first meal for the 7 days breakfast challenge came from the care package Dutch Lady sent me. It was a classic big breakfast; with toast, some grilled hot dogs, fried eggs and sauteed mushrooms. It was really fulfilling and yummy too! If a western style breakfast is right up your alley, you can try this one out. Others great combination would be toast and baked beans or hot pancakes topped with honey and chocolate sauce. Seriously, the choices are endless! Thinking about the possibilities totally got me all pumped up for the next six days of the challenge.

Day 2: On The Go with Dutch Lady PureFarm Milk

There is something nostalgic about cookies and milk combination for me. Apart from being the easiest on-the-go breakfast option, this combo also reminds me of my high school days. I was a boarding school student and it was normal for us to have our own food stash in the locker. My favourite choice usually comes down to packet cookies, biscuits and Dutch Lady PureFarm milk. It's the best breakfast option on the day when I was late and missed the dining hall serving time. I was constantly reminded of how important breakfast is for a student so I am glad Dutch Lady PureFarm Milk was there to the rescue every time I need something to fill up my empty stomach. Years later, I still find myself reaching for this breakfast combination whenever I am in a hurry.

Day 3: Embracing Malaysian Spirt with Dutch Lady PureFarm Milk

Nasi Lemak! As a true Malaysian, this is one of my favourite breakfast. Pairing it with milk is great too since I have a pretty low tolerance for spicy food. Yeah, I can't live without it (coz life is boring without a little spice right?) but I tend to feel the stinging faster than other people. If you don't know, milk is a well-known remedy for spicy food as it contains casein, a substance that has the ability to breakdown capsaicin, the spicy factor in chillies. So, no more excuse to indulge in a plate of delicious Nasi Lemak in the morning. As for the milk, you can have it warm or cold. Just the way you like it.

Day 4: It's All About the Healthy Lifestyle with Dutch Lady PureFarm Milk

I wanted something healthier for that day, especially after a heavier Nasi Lemak breakfast on the third day. Decided to have a Banana & Salted Caramel Granola with cold Dutch Lady PureFarm Low Fat High Calcium Milk. Added extra dried berries on top for a fruity-tangy balance to it. This meal is easy to make and yet is very fulfilling. You can substitute the banana with other fruits of your choice too. My other suggestion would be strawberries, blueberries, apricots or peaches. The granola mixture would be up to you too but mine was filled with rolled oats, almonds, flax seeds and cashew nuts!

Day 5: Quick & Easy with Dutch Lady PureFarm Milk

The fifth day of the breakfast challenge was pretty hectic for me. Had to get ready for my friend's wedding as I was one of the bridesmaids. I didn't want to have anything too heavy yet I know that I need the energy boost during the ceremony so I decided to make a Banana French Toast in a mug. It took less than 10 minutes to get everything ready. Only 5 minutes for the preparation and another 5 minutes inside the microwave. I used what I can find in my mum's kitchen so the only topping available was some raisins. Sometimes, I like to sprinkle some cinnamon sugar or even honey on top but my mum ran out of it. The last step is to soak the toast with cold milk and with that, I got the milky goodness  covered, one scoop at a time!

Day 6: Weekend Leisure with Dutch Lady PureFarm Milk

It was a relaxing Sunday and I wanted to spend some quality time with my family. Having a simple conversation over a hot cup of coffee is the way to go and as usual, I like mine creamy with plenty of milk; and Dutch Lady PureFarm Full Cream Milk is definitely the best option for that. If you are a coffee person this is the best balance for you; get that caffeine kick you need along with other milky goodness from the Dutch Lady PureFarm Milk. If you are not a coffee person, you can also add the milk into your favourite hot beverages; be it tea or a rich hot chocolate drink. These drinks go perfectly well with any breakfast food you can think of. For myself, I decided to pair the coffee with a homemade tuna sandwich.

Day 7: Back to Basic with Dutch Lady PureFarm Milk

The last day for the breakfast challenge overlapped with the public holiday. I was busy going around for the past few days before that so my 'introvert withdrawal symptom' started to take place that day. *giggles* All I wanted to do was to laze around in my cool cow pyjama and binge over Korean drama. So, I just knew what I wanted to have that morning. It was time to go back to basic; to the ultimate breakfast-milk combination that won't ever fail even if others does.Yes, all I did was to take out my favourite cereal out of the kitchen cupboard, pour it out into a big bowl along with plenty of cold Dutch Lady PureFarm Milk. I don't need popcorn for movies. It was the perfect choice for such a lazy day.

Throughout the 7-Days Breakfast Challenge with Dutch Lady PureFarm Milk, I purposely chose less complicated breakfast choices to share with my readers as I wanted to emphasise on how easy it is to consume a well-balanced meal that provides enough nutrients for your daily breakfast. You don't have to be a professional in the kitchen to prepare the best breakfast to have with milk. It's not necessary to wake up at the break of dawn or spent too much time fretting over it. What's important is to give enough thought over what you eat. Breakfast and milk are such a versatile pairing. Milk goes perfectly with almost everything; from spicy foods to the sweetest dessert treats. All you have to do is mix and match them according to your breakfast preference, just like what I did.

Remember, it's very important for everyone to know the significant of milk in daily consumption. We need 2 servings of it per day in order to meet our body nutritional requirement, and having the first serving in the morning is definitely the best way to kickstart the day. I have always been a firm believer of breakfast and now, I know what comes best with it.

What I want to say is, "hey, got milk?"

Till next post, toodles~! ♥ミ
